Hi Joe, I think the answer is yes. Am trying to find out for sure. You will notice that bass strings on many old pianos still have a lot of quality tone to them with virtually no twist on the string when you remove it. the string when removed also hangs with a twist. Of recent times I have restrung the bass in several Yamaha U1 pianos because the sound of the strings are going dumpy and twisting only helps for about 2 years. Thus there must be a reason.
