The "iron on" type veneer has a gummy backing. If you should by chance get the "gummy" side towards the pin, then the pin feel will be ugly. On the other hand, if you put the "gummy" side away from the pin and next to the pin block material, the heat of screwing the pin back in, will "bond" the veneer to the pin block. However, it will still give an ugly feel to the pin, as the backing never really gets "hard". Besides, those type of veneers are usually thinner and IMO not as good.
