If you have some light brass wire I have used two nails the right distance apart in a scrap board and wrapped the wire around the nails in a figure 8 then clipped off the ends so there is a hook at each end. Push this through the hole for the old thread so the hooks catch on the underside of the wippen. This works well on wippen springs but not on jacks :(. Experiment. Newton
