Pinblocks and o/s pins

I suspect that you have a point. If you are starting out with a decent block, and the fit is good, I suspect it likely is faster plugging. The material cost is less. The 1/2" (or 17/32") drilling can be done lickety-split with a hand drill. The plugging goes pretty fast. And then drill for pins.

My guess is that plugging is faster, but perhaps it is close. Certainly if you can't (or don't want to) remove the pinblock (upright, square grand, etc.) plugging very quickly becomes the way to go.

I suspect fitting the block and drilling for the screw holes is close to the time required to do the plugging. The only reason I have done it on floating pinblock grands in the past is because I don't have a band saw, etc. - But as long as the block is not falling apart, I don't think there is any real disadvantage to the method.
