A straight line from lever centre to balance point should pass through the
point of contact of the pilot and the lever heel at half-blow. Once the
balance rail is positioned to achieve this effect, the back-touch should be
arranged to give a suitable key-height in relation to the name rail and
lock rail. The front rail can then be carded up to minimize the number of
front touch washers required. That's about all there is to it. Whether a
given piano will allow of proper regulation is another matter -- a well-
designed piano will and a badly designed one won't.
