Was just thinking about two examples I own... My Delta Unisaw is quiet. 1 1/2 hp motor with a standard belt. It's quiet. Just running the motor without the blade, I hardly can hear it. When it's running normally, I hear the blade noise, almost resembles a whistle, but I don't think the motor or belt can take the blame for most of that. The other is an old Dewalt 12" radial arm saw. (It's a big honkin' thing but I'm too lazy to go look at the horsepower rating.) It's an example of a saw that puts the blade directly on the motor and it's at least 3 times noisier than the Delta, and it ain't all blade noise. Now the sound of a blade cutting wood I'm not sure you can really avoid. Yes, a sharp blade will help a lot. But regardless of what setup you get, I don't think it'll ever be as quiet as your normal bandsaw... Food for thought...
