The same symbols are used on calculators as well.  How do you work things
out at the moment? With log tables?!

The note x temperered semitones above f has a frequency of f multiplied by
the twelfth root of two raised to the power of x.

The note x cents above f has a frequency of f multiplied by the
twelve-hundredth root of two raised to the power of x.

The nth root of x is equivalent to x raised to the power of the reciprocal
of n.
