when I used to live in an apartment, I installed thick foam baffles between 
the back posts, as well as a thinner piece lining the kick board. this 
dampened the overall volume to a fair degree, but didn't totally kill it 
like those practice mutes. As a side benefit, a BIG one, is that fact that 
the tuning has stayed solid for almost a whole year! I measure the pitch 
periodically, and it seems never to be more than +-3 Cents. The foam 
obviously protects the soundboard (to a seemingly high degree)from exposure 
to temperature, drafts and to changes in RH.
