> I too would like to learn how to find noises. >My piano has a small rattle that only happens on G# . >I've fished under the plate for a long time, >tried knocking the soundboard, holding my hand >on different places, and still it rattles Gerald Gerald, List, Unfortunately, fishing alone won't do it on grands, as any veteran angler will testify. It requires a mirror, an adequate flashlight, another person, a listening ear that can focus on direction and patience. As an excellent example of elusive sounds and necessary persistance, I just found this year a sympathetic vibration in a Bosie grand that had been eluding me for several past tunings. The owner never seemed really bothered by it, but it certainly aggravated me to a point where I said this far, and no further. Oddly, it also was G#, G#5 that is. I got together with the owner and said I had to find this elusive object. As it turned out, it was a remmant of music wire from a previous breakage that occurred years ago. It had lodged ever so neatly between the piano rim and the soundboard where the tail curves around to meet the straight side. It took several, looking passes before I finally saw the rascal. What a great feeling I had. Talk about feel like a champ! Good luck on your search, Keith McGavern Registered Piano Technician Oklahoma Chapter 731 Piano Technicians Guild USA
