Fire Damage

All,
What you need to know about fire damage is volumes, but the main objects of
concern are heat, moisture and ACID, (that is created by the burning). The
more plastics and synthetics are involved, the more problem the acid will
be.
My policy for fire damaged pianos is that the piano should be cleaned up
ASAP and then left alone for at least 6 months. Then a tuning should be
attempted. Once it is established that there has not been any structural
damage to the piano, then, and only then, should repairs be done.
For more comprehensive information, the best person, I know, is James
Schmitt, Portland Chapter. He is, IMHO, THE authority.

Joe Garrett, RPT, (Oregon)
