The dowels I cut for the Estey worked. There was a cotton ball in the sockets. They really look plain and weak, but they take the load off the lyre mount. I wonder if a baluster from an architectural milling place would work? Most are square at the base to mount to the floor but some are tapered at both ends for a bottom rail mount. Because of the code for the spacing between them getting narrower, they are turning them thinner than they used to.
