Yes, I certainly see your point. However, I have come to accept the fact that a significant percentage of piano owners see the piano as a box with keys. Some may not even know what the keys are ("let me ask little Suzie - she plays this piano"). This piano was reportedly bought at an antique store. I'm sure it is entirely possible that the former owner sold it to the store for $40 thinking that it was a decent piano - maybe just needing a few minor repairs. The store folks may not have thought any differently. Perhaps I should have given her the sledge-hammer speech in hope that I don't see this particular piano again. Darn. She had such a distraught look on her face, I just couldn't cover that ground.
