Newton, I think you may have missed his initial problem. The problem he is having has to do with the interferance from the pressure bar. Once you have a splice formed getting that splice under the pressure bar could be tricky. I have seen the tubing method as you suggest. It works fine to get plain wire (with no splices) into position, but tying the splice and getting it under is not fun. My take on the problem.
