I'm sure it is at least a legitimate concern. The epoxy needs to soak/migrate into the wood a little bit at least to provide a strong bond - or at least have a nice rough surface to "bite" into. If the glue is intact and does not let the epoxy migrate through it, and especially if the glue has a smooth surface, you may indeed not get a good bond at all.
