It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of us have developed a lessened tolerance for excessive loudness. What brings it on -- middle age? Loud rock concerts in our youth? I dunno. I know for myself that I'm much more comfortable tuning with earplugs. Furthermore, it's easier to detect voicing problems or extra-musical noises without the overload from string vibrations. I've also found that I can hear individual conversations in a noisy environment better with the plugs than without. The earplugs make it possible to withstand the abuse of noise without going into states of systems-overload, without throwing temper-tantrums, without stumbling around feeling like my brain is made of crumbling foam rubber ... etc. Earplugs ... don't leave home without them. I just went through a hearing exam, and was given a sample of "attenuating" ear plugs. They showed me how to insert them and, while I had them in, normal converstion was continued. The ear plugs reduced the volume of all frequencies by about 20db. So, I could still hear normally but with the volume turned down. I use the headphone type in the shop around machinery, but will try these new ones while tuning. I know others on the list use ear plugs.
