Avery, I don't know if this will help; you can get a broken tuning pin remover, I have one with me in my kit, although I don't know if it would work with only 1/4" sticking out of the plate. I've never really had to use it, just one of those emergency things that the truly paranoid carry with them. If you try getting it out with an "ez-out" type screw extractor, make sure you're using the square kind, not the screw-in type. They're much less likely to break. I think you can get those from McMaster-Carr.
