Subject: Spread-Cheeks Wurlie
Hi Everyone!
=20
Just for the amusement value ....
=20
Have any of you tried servicing a "Juke-Box" style Wurlitzer spinet? =
Shall we say politely, that getting the thing opened up for servicing =
was counter-intuitive at best. When all was said and done short of =
smashing case parts, the sides which curved around and formed about 2/3 =
of the front swung outward giving it the "spread-cheeks" look. =
Comically strange.

Too bad the piano itself was nothing to write home about -- bad =
pinblock, blown-out bridges, etc. ... clinically dead but it was an =
heirloom so I did what I could to improve it without blowing out the =
budget. (Sorry -- I didn't have a camera with me. Maybe next time.)

Yes, Wurtilizer [sic] had a bad reputation for making pianos that were =
difficult to get into, having panels that were Chinese puzzles to =
remove, etc., then they changed that (not 'til the 70's or 80's) and ran =
an ad campaign in the Journal showing how they were now "open for =
business". The thing I hate on most Wurlies is the "ledge" or "shelf" =
in the plate casting that prevents getting a temerament strip in very =
far, especially just above the mid-treble break. =20
Then there are the pianos (maybe not all of them Wurlitzers) that =
have the non-full length bottom panel. You can get to the pedals to =
adjust lost motion all right, but if a pedal rod (dowel) comes off a =
trap lever, or if you have to remove trap levers for any reason, they're =
a long awkward reach thru the cobwebs in the dark to get at!! David =
