I personally know a fellow now playing the PGA golf tour, who started playing on a starter set of clubs. A partial set consists of every 2nd club in the set, and usually has just one used off a tee. ( driver ) This taught him to hit half shots and manufacture shots using his imagination, thus developing what we call " feel ". You can't teach feel!! (A club is designed to hit a ball a certain distance, commensurate with your strength and ability.) I personally was in contact with the conductor of the symphony in our city who was playing a benefit at a local seniors place. The piano was a very poor short grand, in questionable condition. I spent a fair amount of time one day trying to make it a decent instrument, but when I was done, I wasn't all that confident that the maestro would see this as an instrument worthy of his play. The word I got later was that he had a great time entertaining these people and seemed to enjoy himself as much as they did. When asked if the piano was alright, he said that he had played much worse, especially when he wasn't the maestro, and it didn;t bother him one little bit. This is a man who was very open minded and practical, knowing that not all pianos are $100,000.00 concert grands.
