The sad truth is, and I agree with Avery, pianists tend to be the most uninformed about their instrument of all the instrumentalists. It is a constant challenge to have to explain what and why the piano needs what it does to perform properly. I find this to be true even of concert musicians. Surprisingly, many of the music schools require a course in piano technology for piano majors. The last pianist I had a discussion with about this was telling me quite proudly how she had managed to avoid going to most of the classes.
