Mystery ... was Dead bass strings

Guys:
     For the dumb boy in Decatur, Ala., please explain to me how fumes 'kill' 
bass strings. I'm not being ugly. I really want to know. Yes I know, most 
things spilled, sprayed or squirted on the bass string will harm them but 
fumes???
