Let me see now. If the radius of the soundboard as measured underneath =
is 65 feet, then the radius on top should be 65 feet plus .375 inch =
except for the edges which would be 65 feet plus .375 minus .100. =
Actually, it wouldn't truly be a radius since it is not really a part of =
a circle. I can't decide what kind of figure that would be. Oh! forget =
the whole thing. You guys got too much time on your hands.

Does that mean that you should add to the measured crown when using =
the string test from underneath for the same reason?

Get two blocks of wood measuring exactly 7" high. Place them on =
the soundboard at opposite edges of whatever part of the piano you want =
to measure. Put a straight edge across the top of the two blocks and at =
a point midway between the blocks, measure the distance from the bottom =
of the straightedge to the soundboard. Subtract that number from 7" and =
the amount left over is the amount of crown.

                    Hi Dave

Not so. In Steinway and other pianos the net result of =
the diaphramizing (panel thinning) can leave the board thickness at the =
edges where the blocks are placed at .250 thick and the middle of the =
board can be as much or more than 100. thicker. Even with a flat board =
this method of measuring crown would give a false reading as the middle =
of the board will always be thicker (higher) than the edges. If you use =
this method you've got to factor this in.
