Jim Coleman, Sr. probably worked out the pure 5ths tuning partly because it 
pleased his violinist's ear. Jim?

When I tune with a stretch pleasing to string players, the middle treble of 
the piano seems to me to match the orchestra better. They tend to stretch a 
little more than a more conventional tuning.
