Ok, so heres a new one on me... Patented in 1860's or there abouts... a soundboard is glued only to the back part the rim... about 10 inches long space. The rest ot the edge of the soundboard "floats" on a glass shelve which is placed on the rim. I think there is also glass on the end grain of the panel, and glass on top, and the whole thing is held in place by a piece of moulding pressed and glued to the inner rim. The idea is supposedly to totally isolate the soundboard as a vibrating system from the rest of the piano. The glass was supposed to simply reflect everything back into the panel.
