Very briefly...it adds a certain amount of stiffness to the rim, especially on the straight bass side. Since I have not done a structural analysis on any of these pianos I've no idea just how much this effects the mechanical impedance of the rim and cannot begin to speculate on how much it affects the sustain of the instruments on which it is used. It can't hurt. But, M&H already uses an exceptionally massive and stiff rim so I have to wonder if any real-world improvement is worth the cost but that is a decision that can only be made by M&H. That aside, it is such an inherent part of the traditional M&H design it would probably be unwise to remove it. Del
