On Hamburg S&S the papering is always at the middle of the flange, it does
not goes all along the lips. Once explain me the flange could break if
papered all along (never seen that actually).

Greetings,
If you want the hammer to move to the right, place a piece of paper on
the right side of the flange that only goes from the front to the middle, and
place a piece of paper on the left side that goes from the middle to the
back. This will swing the hammer sideways without changing its travel.
Actually, the paper need not go all the way to the middle of the flange, but
only on the scalloped shoulders.
I have never seen a flange break for this reason, either.
I set my shanks up without hammers. I have them traveling perpendicular
to the whippen rail, and I space them so they are directly over the whippen
holes. From this point, I can make an informed decision on action placement
that causes the least deviation among all 88 shanks.
