I think you guys are talking about two different things: "playing the slot machine", is to be minimized, that is, bending the pin up and down, or flag-poling - the other item, that Randy recommends, is to TURN the pin so that the string is slightly above pitch, and then for a final movement, TURN the pin back to lower tension until the string is at desired pitch.
