Baldwin 'D', #137---, or Have I been sleeping??

I have noticed this on Baldwin D's, and on one 100+ year old Steinway D that 
I service.  Is the justification that it took less precious material (the 
bridge doesn't have to be as wide)?  Is the difference in length so small as 
to be neglible?
