In 23 years of tuning, I've used the extension feature of my tuning hammer
maybe once or twice, on brand new pianos with extremely tight pins. One had
pins so tight that the pitch couldn't be lowered because the tip on the
tuning lever would just unscrew, no matter how much I tightened it with the
tip wrench. Had to go home and get a one-piece goose-neck tuning lever,
which almost bent due to the torque. Otherwise, I never use the extension
handle feature because it's too springy and puts me out of touch with what
the pin is doing in the pinblock. Sincerely, David Nereson, RPT, Denver
