I stick the shank in the hole and cut until it is a little short of where I think it should be. I then get the end of the shank wet with saliva (BIG toothpick) and then set it in the hole, overly high then use a light tapping to move the hammer down little bits at a time then make a small mark on the shank at the butt. When the tone gets worse I don't make a mark. I pull it out to the last mark then put CA in the butt hole to secure the shank in the one perfect position (assuming it is perfect in all other respects). If the hammer set is too soft to get a real good reading then I will use a waste end hammer and dope it with CA. It gets real hard real quick. Do the same thing then set the next hammer up or down to the same height then discard the CAed sample. I have a fixture I made years ago that clamps the back end of the hammer that has an arm to represent the angle of the shank to hammer molding. Once it is set I can glue all the shanks in, one section at a time. I can also set the samples back into the clamp clamp the shanks and cut the whole set off with a Mototool saw blade.
