My understanding was that some manufacturers did this to add tension to 
the bridge beyond the sounding note (whether A0 or notes at the 
bass/tenor break), thereby avoiding the sometimes poor tone found at the 
breaks. I think Jim Harvey pointed out the feature on a Kawai at the 
NAMM show several years ago.
