If I AM refinishing the plate, I usually use TSP in warm water, but have used quite a few cleaners over the years with good results, including spic and span. I use a scrub brush. In cases where the plate is being cleaned while still in the piano, or is otherwise not being refinished, I favor mineral spirits, applied with a cotton cloth, followed by a polish (like Meguiar's).
