David, I just cleaned the plate of a piano I'm restringing and, although I had the plate out to clean and inspect the board and pinblock, the owner didn't want to go the cost of refinishing the plate. So I used car polish (Meguire's). Of course, it doesn't look perfect but I could remove any grunge that was on there and it brought back the shine. And the board, after the same treatment, looks like it's been refinished. Tom Cole
