Wendy,
I think it would be helpful to first describe the modification to the =
"voice-grips" pliers. I use the (# 4 or # 5) needle nose pliers. It is =
necessary to grind the jaws of the pliers so they can grip the hammer =
felt where you want to but not crush the entire hammer. Remove some =
metal on the interior of the jaws so they are shaped more like a pincher =
than a flat plier. I've seen someone acheive the same effect by welding =
some ball bearings to the inner tips of the pliers. I have a hand out =
from a class given by Bill Spurlock. It shows the mod to the tool and =
descibes the procedure. I'd be happy to mail or fax you a copy. Sorry, =
no scanner.

Hi Wendy,
As with any voicing go easy at first and get a feel for what the =
hammer is doing in responce to the vise grips.
Other than that go to it with the same idea in mind as with asy other =
needle steam etc voicing.
I like to think of three spots two of which are the same.
Think upright with me now.
The tip #1 and the other two the top and bottom sholder.
Squeezing the two and three will mostly give more rebound to the =
hammer.
At the tip will soften the tone unless the hammers are like rocks,
then it will slightly open up the tone.
Work a little on each piano at the bass tenor break and get the feel =
of what is likely to happen.
Good luck in your efforts.
