Hi Jim, 
           You just triggered a few more thoughts,  A loose glue joint on
the belly rail or rim would have the same effect. I have seen a piano with
similar symptoms, good crown, and the joint on the extreme belly rail loose.
If the bridge has not rolled, Try for 0.010"- 0.015" of net bearing with
the 3 leg dial gauge, using the half round bar.
Like you, I am suspecting excessive loading.  But careful inspection of
bridge pins and capo bars can cause a big loss of tone.
It does not take much to CA glue a few bridge pins,  and polish the capo bar.
For me skimming the bridge would be the last resort.
