Stephen There are two characteristics I like in a good tuning lever: comfort ( an ergonomic handle) and control (balance and lightness). Unfortunately most of what is commercially available doesn't fit those catagories. The standard "cigar" shaped hammers sold by the major suppliers are hard on the hands, disproportionately weighted on the tip ends, and simply too heavy. The one positive thing they do offer is extendability, something to consider. The ball end hammers are a good step in remediating some of these problems. Better still are the hammers offered by Keith Bowman through Renner USA. About eight months ago I hit upon the idea of using titanium instead of steel for tuning hammer shafts. This considerably lightens the overall weight of the hammer and greatly improves balance. I've made and sold a few of my hand made hammers. It's been an enjoyable hobby. Well, this list isn't a forum for buying and selling. So much for my pitch. But here's a different kind of suggestion: if you're somewhat handy and have access to a lathe, why not make your own tuning hammer? I've done a few classes around the midwest where I show technicians how to make their own. I have a detailed procedure written out explaining the steps with drawings of the handle and shaft.Understand, turning wood takes a bit of practice; but it's not that difficult. I probably have some left over copies of the procedure around my shop. Anyone interested?
