Hi Gordon,

Burning in is usually heating the hammer shank while twisting it and
letting it cool. It is for alignment purposes.

Rendering means the string slides. There are many points of friction (no we
don't deep fry our strings *grin* nor boil them to render the fat)

Raking is like the floor of an auditorium. On some upright pianos the
strike point can be improved by having progressively longer hammer shanks
near the tenor break. It can also mean that the hammers are NOT glued on
the shanks at 90 degrees.
