    You answered your own question.  There is a spring on the back of
the keyframe that does indeed return the monkey to the rest position
(down).  Take out the keyframe and turn it around.  Use a flat bladed
screwdriver to get underneath the spring (leaf spring is about 4"
long).  Pry it up while you move the monkey underneath it, and let the
spring fall into the slot at the bottom.  By the way, is this piano
modified (with a player?).   Sometimes the sostenuto spring gets removed
when installing the player mechanism.
