The actual answer to "How long is a piece of string?" - is, "a third" Defined as; a bunch of university types got together with clipboards, white coats (so as to make it scientific) and various lengths of string. When dropped from differnt heights, the string lands in a little pile, the extreme edges of this pile each on average measures a third of the length of that piece of string.
