Clean the tails for any glaze or fat that may have built up, make sure they
are squared to the backchecks, make sure hammer flange centers are not too
loose, a light brushing of the backcheck leather with some 180 or so paper,
make sure the keys are not loose and wobbling on the balance rail pin are
amoung some of the basics. These off course have to be in decent shape even
if you do replace checks and rearc tails (or replace hammers)

In my experience roughing the tails, beyond very very moderate roughing, is
in the end counter productive and you dont really gain anything in the
process. The check system seems to work best when the tail can slide deep (ie
create more tension on the backcheck wire) and straight down into the
backcheck, and when the backcheck itself (ie the whole key assembly) is
solid enough to hold the hammer in check)

Wobbly and dirty parts do not make for good checking and I suspect account
for more checking problems then just about anything else.

my 12 øre anyways. :)
