The secret to using the electric shank bender, or any other form of heat, is 
to bend the shank while the heat is on, and then take the heat away, to keep 
the shank bent in the direction you put it. What happens is that with the 
heat, the fibers of the wood get soft enough for you to bend the shank If you 
release the shank, and take the heat away, the fibers will go back where they 
came from. However, if you remove the heat, and keep the shank bent the way 
you want it, then the fibers will set in the new position. 

Try this. It will work.
