Hi Brian, It's interesting that you mention the over- population of elephants. I hate the idea of killing as much or more than a lot of other people. But I do wonder if a "selective harvest" might not be appropriate, much like it is here with a huge deer population. If they are not 'harvested', the deer tend to get so over-populated that they end up starving to death over winter, destroying crops, and becoming a bigger threat to people who may be driving. Is one worse than the other? (I won't try to answer that one for anyone else.) I also thought about someone's post (actually, this is piano related) that mentioned a place in Europe where the forest IS managed for sustainable yields of quality lumber where much wood for musical instruments is harvested. I like that. It seems that here in North America, the pendulum swings, first to the point where no tree is sacred and all is open to destruction in the name of profits... and then all the way to no tree shall ever be cut for any reason ever. True ecological responsibility, sustainable agriculture, lies somewhere in the middle (again, just a personal opinion). Along with much power comes much responsibility. Along with much responsibility comes much obligation. Life does get complicated, doesn't it? Best wishes, Brian Trout Quarryville, PA btrout@desupernet.net
