piano wire

I don't really have a preference. I was using wire I got from an estate
many years ago and was tired of it. Running short on a few sizes, colors
didn't match, and 2 or 3 sizes must have not been annealed properly.
Couldn't make a bass string type loop without it splitting. I asked on the
list and got very few responses, but someone said he'd changed to Mapes Gold
and was happy with it. James Arledge told me he thought it was too hard,
but he was using it for making bass strings and thought it would be fine for
plain wire. Bought it from Mapes direct and with the shipping and one set
of tuning pins (100lbs) the cost was about $545 ( that's for 17 five pound
rolls). I'm about to string my first piano with it. I have no reference to
evaluate it for sound. I'd like to know what the difference in sound is,
but that is so subjective I wouldn't know what to believe. The color match
will be obvious and I will report after I've used it. Anything else I
notice will be reported as well.
