There are many ways to tune an octave. The stretch of the octave increases from 2-1 type to 4-2 to 6-3 to 8-4 to 10-5 to 12-6 types. Gary asked how you can tell which kind you have. Here are aural tests for each. 2-1 for A3 to A4 Use D3 as a common test note. the 5th D3-A3 will equal the beat rate of D3-A4. For ETD users set up A4 for reading both notes. 4-2 for A3 to A4 Use F3 as a common test note. the M3rd F3-A3 equals F3-A4 in beat rate. For ETD users set up A5 for reading both notes. 6-3 for A3 to A4 Use C4 as common test note. The minor 3rd A3-C4 = C4-A4 Maj 6th in beat rates. For ETD users set up E6 for reading A3 = A4 8-4 for A2 to A3 Use F3 as common test note. The min 6th A2-F3 = F3-A3 Maj 3rd in beat rate. For ETD users set up A5 for reading A2 = A3 10-5 for A1 to A2 Use F#2 as common test note. The M6th A1-F#2 = F#2-A2 Min 3rd in beat rate. For ETD users set up C#5 for reading A1 = A2 Jim Coleman, Sr.
