Help me avoid doing any damage

The paint was probably applied right over the varnish finish. This will make 
removing the paint very easy. The varnish will also come right off, using 
normal paint remover. If you can see some Mahogany underneath some of the 
paint, that is what you'll wind up with. You can either spray lacquer over 
the bare wood, or use tung oil for a nice semi gloss finish.
