A few days ago I tuned Baldwin console #354606. All the back stop leathers were just as hard as the wood to which they are glued. The result was that hammers tended to bounce instead of being checked. Is there any simple way to soften the leather to its original supple condition so it will do its job correctly? For a temporary fix I roughed up the leather slightly with sand paper, and the checking is fine for now. Arlie -- Arlie D. Rauch Glendive, MT
