MDF-Medium Density Fiberboard looks exactly like compressed cardboard. =
It machines and finishes like wood and is relatively stable. It's been =
in used in cabinetry for a long time and is finding its way into piano =
cases. I just repaired a gouge in the keyslip of a Young Chang PF110 =
Queen Anne Cherry--yup! MDF.

  Subject: YC case parts

  I just found out something about the cases of Young Chang consoles. A=20
  customer was moving a console piano on a truck, which was involved in =
an=20
  accident, causing the piano to tip over. Among the parts that were =
damaged=20
  were the sides. When my refinisher evaluated the sides, he discovered =
that=20
  the material wasn't even particle board, which is what a lot of piano =
case=20
  parts are made out of now. The sides of the piano are made of hard =
compressed=20
  cardboard.=20
