Fine tuning can enhance simpathetic vibration among all the strings, thus more life from the board and strings, and therefore more damping to be accomplished. As oters have said already, check damper follow and spring tension, but you may want to try this first. I made a simple little device that has saved damping nightmares many times. It is a about an eight inch piece of 3/16 dowel with a voicing needle drilled and glued into the end. The needle sticks out about an inch and a quarter. I have found that simply inserting the needle into the interior of the damper one, two, or three times, fluffing the felt from the inside, has stopped many a damper from ringing. It has worked on many a grand and upright. The longer dowel helps get under frame struts and reach down into upright dampers. It doesn't need to be strong to poke into most damper felt. Treble damper buzzing can often be eliminated by simply drawing your finger over the surface of the damper felt. It works sometimes. Bass dampers can sometimes respond to a lightly applied round file. Roger C.
