bumps in keys

Beetle larvae, perhaps?  Have you seen any pin-sized holes in any of the key woods?  Many tiny beetles lay their eggs in soft wood.  The larvae then eat their way out, leaving tiny tubes in the wood.

Guess a far-out guess.
