Ron, my man,

You have hit this particular nail on the head, exactly.  I grew up in a 
family of teachers, almost grew up in the school itself.  My father, who 
lived to a ripe old age of 96, never wavered from his belief that the system 
was exactly as you have described it, and that private schools could not, and 
would not do the job that the public schools must by law take on.  Teachers 
and pianotechs are truly appreciated only by the few--would that teachers had 
the right to walk away from untunable students.
