thanks everyone, I've got some things to try now. My son would like our old Thompson full upright to have a little more heft to the touch, I've already strengthened the springs, so I'll try some of your ideas on my own piano first. :) I'll let you know if anything makes a big difference, I think the solder idea sounds interesting........
